The Unmistakable Brilliance Of Dan Gerstein

was recently on display in the WSJ (covered here). Among my favorite "facts" from Gerstein was

The signs of change are unmistakable. Over the last year, the Kossacks themselves seemed to be waning -- the number of monthly page views on the site is down dramatically.

Unfortunately for Gerstein, he misses some essentials that a self-described Democratic strategist ought to know... the main one being that an election year drives more traffic than a non-election year.

Want proof? Okay... click pic for bigger graph of site page views. 2006 was more than 2005, and 2008 is shaping up to be more than 2007.

The site traffic data was previously discussed here (including the reference to AJAX correction). At the time, I said

The so-called drop in traffic seems somewhat exaggerated; traffic is driven by the news and events as much as anything else. Time will tell where the numbers go, but that, too, is likely driven by news and events, and (see RSS) technology.

Welcome to the reality-based community, Dan. It's impressive that a Democratic consultant like yourself has such command of the basics. In truth, it appears that Daily Kos site decline, despite the data, will continue to be greatly exaggerated by those who have an interest in doing so, and Gerstein clearly has an agenda that doesn't include objectivity. Oh, and for the record, that's true for the Wall Street Journal, too.
